Lyon Silks in the Long 18th-century. From Production to Fashion

By the end of the seminar, students will be familiar with the milestones in the development of the European silk industry in the early modern period, as well as with the evolving styles that dominated the Western world throughout the 18th century. Students will be introduced to the historiography on the Lyonnais silk industry, as well as to how it relates to broader subjects studied by art historians and historians alike. Students will also be introduced to the major museum collections holding 18th-century fabrics and garments, and to the tools to search these collections.
